Drs. Laura Feemster, David Au, Lucas Donovan, Kristina Crothers, and Vincent Fan are all investigators in the VA Center of Innovation (COIN) for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care. Currently, Drs. Feemster and Donovan serve as Co-Associate Directors. The COIN includes over 50 investigators, including clinicians and non-clinician scientists, health systems researchers, health economists, implementation scientists, and epidemiologists. The COIN also includes robust cores for qualitative and quantitative methods, aimed at providing a robust comprehensive review around care delivery. Within the VA, PCCSM faculty conduct work primarily aimed at prevalent conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer screening, sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) effects of toxic exposures on the lung (VF), pulmonary infections, and pulmonary complications among patients living with HIV.
Clinical Trials of Health Systems Interventions
Supported by over $25 million in awards from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), VA Research & Development, and the National Institutes of Health, Drs. Au, Feemster, Donovan, and Crothers are currently conducting several large multi-site clinical trials. EQuiP-COPD (NCT 05718102) is a cluster randomized trial testing pharmacist relative to pulmonary specialist-directed population health management among patients with COPD. FOCuSEd (NCT 05718102) is a randomized trial testing a telehealth delivered pulmonary rehabilitation and weight management intervention among patients with comorbid COPD, OSA, and obesity. POWER (NCT 05104450) is a pragmatic trial testing the effectiveness of a proactively delivered and scalable weight loss intervention to improve co-primary endpoints of sleep-related quality of life and weight among Veterans with OSA and obesity. ACHIEVE (NCT 03856879) is a trial testing population health management for COPD among patients living with HIV.
