How to Apply
All applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Select the Physician Scientist, Clinician Educator, or Clinical Track when applying; we strongly discourage application to multiple tracks.
Your ERAS application must include:
- Completed application form
- Personal statement addressing career objectives
- 3 letters of recommendation (1 must be from your Residency Program Director)
All application materials, including all supporting letters, must be submitted no later than August 1st.
Please note that as our fellowship program is primarily supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents (green card).

Interviews
In alignment with the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD), our national professional society, and to ensure a uniform interview process that is equitable to all applicants, our fellowship interviews for the applicants in 2024-2025 will be held exclusively virtually. We will not offer in-person site visits. The full recommendation is available here.
Fellowship applicant interviews will occur virtually in September and October and are filled on a rolling basis. Applicants who are invited to interview will receive a link to a website with more details about the virtual interview process. Applicants will meet with members of the Fellowship Selection Committee and faculty who share their clinical, research, and/or education interests. We invite applicants to join our virtual "happy hour" events to speak with current fellows who can give insight into their experience in the program and Seattle.

Eligibility Criteria
Prior to entry into the PCCM fellowship program at the University of Washington, applicants must complete an Internal Medicine Residency accredited by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
As the PCCM fellowship program is primarily supported by the NIH, applicants to the program must be US citizens or permanent residents (green card).
Selection Criteria
The PCCM program uses a holistic review process as recommended by the American Association of Medical Colleges and the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine process that balances consideration of experiences, attributes, and metrics. The program is particularly interested in candidates who plan a career in academic medicine, either as a physician-scientist or clinician-educator, with a clinical training track available in some years.
The program is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, and does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or any other applicable legally protected status. Final ranking decisions are made by the Fellowship Selection Committee and reflect the impressions of the candidate gleaned from interviews as well as the criteria outlined above.
The program will obtain verification of each entering fellow's level of competence upon completion of the core residency program, using the ACGME or CanMEDS Milestone evaluations.
