Mentorship and Career Development

Our Division has a strong culture of mentorship that begins with fellows and extends into the faculty years. A formalized and nationally recognized mentorship structure, resources, and dedicated support staff have a proven record of success.

Mini-Sabbaticals

First-year fellows are relieved of clinical duties for one week in the fall and one week in the spring. In the mornings, fellows have procedural or simulation training, and afternoons are protected to meet with faculty and senior fellows to discuss research interests

Faculty mentors

Our T32 faculty mentors have $46 million in grant funding (average of $1.2 million per investigator) and support our trainees in obtaining publications. Our fellows graduate from the T32 with a median of 4 first-authored publications. The collaborative culture within UW and Centers within the Division offer multiple opportunities for trainees.

Mentoring Committees

All fellows have a primary mentor as well as a mentoring committee comprised of additional faculty members representing program leadership, collaborators, and other content experts. Mentoring committees meet twice a year to offer fellows guidance on research/scholarship, funding and grant applications, conference presentations, and fellow-to-faculty transitions. We use individualized development plans and believe that this focus on mentorship has contributed to the success of our fellows in obtaining faculty positions.

Participation in National Meetings

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine provides financial support for second- and third-year fellows to travel to one meeting per year to present their academic work and network.

Works-in-Progress

All fellows receive feedback and support through their respective research/scholarly groups: Research Works in Progress (RWIP) (pre-clinical and translational research), Clinical Research Works in Progress (CRWIP) (clinical and epidemiologic research), and Clinician Educator Works in Progress (medical education scholarship).

The RWIP conference is held twice a month and provides an opportunity for fellows and faculty conducting bench research to present their work to Division members with expertise in basic science research. The CRWIP is a weekly conference in which fellows and junior faculty present and receive feedback on all aspects of their research, including their research questions, project designs, analyses, interpretation and presentation of their results.

Approximately 10 sessions per year are combined RWIP/CRWIP.  These sessions are focused on F32 and K-award mock grant reviews, International Conference practice, and general career development.

Learning how to Critically appraise the data

All fellows participate in our Division’s Journal Club, which is hosted each month at different faculty member’s home. A fellow will select an article to discuss, and an in-depth discussion will focus on study designs, methods, analyses, and interpretation.

Each month our Division hosts Pulmonary Grand Rounds. This monthly conference will often feature outside speakers who discuss a clinical topic, but with an emphasis the data and cutting-edge research behind the topic.
